3D Imaging adds further depth to VSC8000 document analysis

 

A new 3-Dimensional imaging feature for the VSC8000 enables document examiners to derive a 3D model of a documents surface topography in order to better analyze security features, pen-tip strokes and other impressions in paper.

 

Making use of the camera and illumination options already present within the VSC8000, the new 3D imaging mode will be of interest to all professional document examiners but will have particular relevance to those involved in the inspection of signatures and handwriting, particularly in cases of proof of provenance and ownership dispute.

 

3D Imaging for the examination of Handwriting and Signatures

A typical handwritten document will feature a myriad of surface features including paper roughness, creases and folds, indentations, and pen-tip strokes. Through the 3D analysis of the pen-tip strokes that make up a signature or section of handwriting, an examiner may be able to discern the sequence in which strokes were applied to a document. This may reveal a deviation from the expected handwriting style or signature.

 

3D Imaging for the examination of Intersecting Lines

It is a common request for a forensic document examiner to identify in which order strokes or marks were added to a document. In cases where two lines intersect or cross over each other, the examiner may be able to discern the order in which the separate strokes were applied by observing the regularity of each mark and the point at which they intersect.

 

3D Imaging for Security Printing

For the precise analysis and quality control of banknote and high-security document printing, 3D imaging offers a chance to scrutinize the quality and uniformity of 3-dimensional security features including intaglio inks, embossing, laser engraving, and other tactile features.
